Nickeled Back: Oregon to Tax Bottled Water

For years people have been making weekly bottle runs, reaping small change from soda and beer cans. In Oregon they will soon be able to do the same with water. A change to the state’s Bottle Bill implements a five cent deposit on each water bottle.

The policy, officials hope, will encourage consumers to recycle the more than 200 million containers they purchase every year. While only 20 percent of soda and beer bottles make it to the landfill, more than half of water bottles accumulate there.

I am excited about this! I think it is a great idea to put a deposit on water, because then it will encourage people to take the bottles back to recycle! Tongue

This bill will help keep plastic bottles out of our lanfils - sounds good to me.

Oregon’s bottle bill, too, does increase costs. But such a policy creates economic incentive to recycle — not just bureaucracy, PR campaigns and state-sponsored cleanups. In Oregon to be returnable with a minimum refund value. It is administered and enforced by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

I read your post which is really good. Your policy which creates economic incentive to recycle.Your great idea to put of water deposit is to be appreciable work.
